    More carb woes...

So I got my newest set of eBay carbs today...

After struggling for three hours I finally got the ginormous airbox, carbs, and all wedged into the petit 550 frame... The airbox still isn't fully coupled because I am short a deep socket and some missing nuts and bolts that have yet to surface, but after about 2 minutes of trying to start it it rumbled to life even though I connected the throttle cable backwards That took a little getting used to as I rode it arround campus for the first time in months...

It was leaking fuel pretty bad out of the center fuel tee because the hose wasn't clamped on properly.... I fixed it as best I could temporarily but it still dribbles a little bit...however that isn't my biggest concern...

After I rode it arround to my class for a while and let it sit uppon returning I couldn't get it to start unless I have the choke all the way on. On top of that giving the throttle just kills it...very similar to the old carbs...

Methinks I have no vacuum...It will only run with the choke off if I have it on PRI and although I know that's not terrible good for the bike I only did it to get it home..about half a mile..

What could be causing this sudden change and what should I do? Does not having the airbox properly mated all the way make that big of a difference? Could a fuel leak lead to such a large problem.

Your input is much appreciated as always.

    Thanks,

First, having to run it with the petcock on PRI, sounds like either the vacuum is low from the carburators and/or the petcock is not working.

Second, you bet that not having the airbox coupled will make it run badly. I had the same problem on my 550. I had apparently bent the brackets holding the airbox and although I got it coupled and tightened down, after about 10 miles the airbox side had worked its way off the carbs on the bottom side. It ran like crap. It looked like the angle wasn't correct and the clamps just wouldn't hold the rubber tubes on the carbs. I carefully bent everything back into place and haven't had any problems.

You can't give it throttle until it is warmed up or it will die.

You need to get everything clamped together correctly and then if there is a problem, you may need to clean the carbs.

Yea that's what I'm thinking as well... The problem shouldn't be with the petcock though as it's brand new...if anything something nerfed my vacuum...but could the vacuum be reduced that much by the airbox not being fully coupled with the filter?

As for the giving it throttle thing, I ran it on choke for like 5+ whole minutes and I still had the same problem so I don't think it has to do with engine temp in the case because I know it was warm.

I had this problem with the old carbs too even when the engine was starting to overheat it wouldn't take the throttle... Sigh.. maybe I still have a vacuum leak at the boots after changing the orings...

        Have you checked timing?

Are you positive you have the hoses to/from the carbs hooked up correctly? I'm assuming you do but I had to ask. Check the carb cleaning procedures on this forum for a good review!

Could the vacuum line have a leak?

When you look in the tank, do you see rust that could be clogging everything up?

Lastly, are the carbs you got used and dirty or have they been cleaned?

Hmm on second thought some of the hoses may not be hooked up correctly...

Does anyone know where the hoses go that come out of carb bodies 1 and 4 on the top? I think they are vacuum hoses because the one coming out of #3 goes to the petcock...

Maybe this is why my vacuum is leaking...

              Anyone?

I am getting ready to try to get it to the shop....

It's about a mile and a half.. most of which is downhill... although I do need to cross a bridge =/

Hi Warui, If the 550 is plumbed the same as a 1000, then the tubes from #1 and #4 are vents and are not connected to anything. They should be routed up near the top of the air box. If it ran correctly at first then started running poorly, I would suggest using a can of BG44 or Techraline cleaner through it. Sounds like some crud settled in a passage after the gas partly disolved it. These cleaners do wonders. Good luck, Ray
