    Bike Stalled As Soon As Put in Gear

    I have 1977 GS750B. This bike has been in storage approx 10 years. The mileage on the bike is 23,000 miles.

    The carbs were rebuilt, synch'ed along with new spark plugs, oil change, points and condensers. The bike now runs like it is new.

    The bike has not been ridden over 10 years and this is the first time I tried to ride it. Here is the problem....as soon as I put it in first gear, it stalled (the clutch has not even been released). I read several posts about clutch problems (stuck, worn-out, etc...) but kind of confused and need your help.

    I read the manual but could not find anywhere about the safety switch. My Yamaha Virago has a safety switch which is attached to the side stand; the engine will shut off if the side stand is still engaged when the bike is put into gear. Can anyone know if there is a safety switch on this bike? Also, would this problem be directly realated to the clutch being stuck?

    Any help or suggestions would be appreciated....

      Does the bike jump forward when put in gear? This would indicate a stuck or mis-adjusted clutch. Try putting it on the centerstand and putting it in gear CAREFULLY with the rear wheel off the ground. If the wheel spins and the bike doesn't die you have a clutch problem.

          When I put it in gear, it just died. It did not jump forward.

          I never thought about putting in centrestand. I will try it today when I get home.

              My 82 gs750 clutch will occasionally stick, which causes the bike to die when I put it into first. Putting a little gas into neutral and dropping it into gear will usually free up those plates. Otherwise maybe try rocking the bike to the other side to get some oil into the clutch. If it doesn't free up easily, you may have bigger problems. Good luck!

                  had the same problem after winter storage. put on cenre stand, let engine warm up and then put into gear. worked after a few attempts...b.b.

                      Was your idle speed high enough for the engine to handle the clutch drag? If your engine is barely turning over, the extra drag of putting it in gear could stall it.

                      On the other hand, if your idle speed is high (1500 RPM or more) when it stalls, I would suspect some kind of electrical short involving the gear indicator or neutral switch.

                              I came home about an hour ago and tried it. It was on the centrestand and I managed to shift into first gear. It ran with hesitation (rear wheel was turning slowly) for about 15 seconds and then died. Since I took the gas tank off the bike on the weekend to prepare for painting, it did not have enough gas in the carbs to test. I will have to get some gas in the tank and then try again tomorrow night. It appears to me that the clutch was stuck.

                              In response to Flyingace, the bike runs really smooth as I have had worked on the carbs. The only problem I have right now is just the clutch.... there might be charging problem as well but for now, I am only concentrate on the clutch....

                                  Were no safety switch in "77", they started "I think" in "80", right after they made the headlight stop working.

                                      It turned out to be the clutch which was stuck. She is up and running again.
