The smoke comes out of the tailpipes, and also (it seems like) from the underside of the engine. Is there a mixture issue, or something else I can fix, or is this normal for a bike of it's age (1980) and mileage (80,000)?

GS 850G smokes white on startup for a few minutes
I just picked up a GS850G and it's smoking white for a minute or few when I start it up. The guy I bought it from said it's done that for since he's had it, and it's never caused a problem, but I'd prefer to at least know what's going on with it.

If it's white, and not blue, then it's most likely just condensation being burned off as steam. Especially if it's cold in your neck of the woods right now, and especially if you've just taken it on short rides (less than 10 miles) or just periodically start it up in your garage.
I'd say if it makes good power and there's an equal amount of pressure coming out of both tailpipes (assuming it has a 4-into-2 exhaust), don't sweat it right now.
Now if this thing throws out smoke for awhile on a 80 degree day, then I'd say there might be a little problem.

I've only had the bike for about 2 days, but the guy I bought it off of says that he rode it occasionally. The smoke only comes out for a bit when the bike first starts up, and is pretty much plain white. After a few minutes the exhaust is clear.
I had it up to 70mph on the highway the other day and it wasn't sputtering or smoking or anything. I live in Florida and it's usually pretty humid here, but it does cool off over night, so it's probably just some condensation collecting and burning off.

I've got an '82 850 that has always done that for a short time when starting up in the morning. If you check your car, you're likely to see the same thing. I also think it's condensation, and it should go away quickly. BTW, mine has a bit over 36K miles on it.
