How stable is the center stand?

I'm new to bikes, so I thought I'd ask before I act.
Is the center stand stable enough that I can have the bike in gear when it's up?

Yeah

Yes...for sure! Just be careful to make sure that there's no way it can rock backwards....and don't spin the tire too fast in gear...(that's not good for a number of reasons.)8-[

Not sure on the 81 but my 79 & 80 GS850's have provisions to install a pin on the centerstand to keep it from rolling off . Lots of times when I am working on the bike I will put a phillips screwdriver in the holes
