I bought and was told this was a 1981 gs 850gl. Is this correct? (the picture is my avitar). I have seen many people post pics but the seat looks different on many of them compared to mine? Thanks!

based on the seat, that doesn't look like an L....

Based on the bodywork, seat, and tank, it looks like you have a GS850G model.

Your bike should have a build plate on the steering neck with the model name and when it was built.
