    Speedo Question 1980 GS850G

I changed out a Broken Speedo Cable Today on My 850. From the Looks of it, I'm Guessing that the old One was the Original.(23,050 Miles) I had not payed a Lot of attention before to the RPM vs Indicated Speed Before the Cable Broke. I took Her on a 40 Mile Ride and Here are the RPM vs Speedo Readings on Smooth Level Road in 5th Gear. 3000rpm = 42 mph indicated, 4000 rpm = 57 mph indicated 5000 rpm = 72 mph and 6000 rpm = 82 mph

Anything above 6000 rpm = Unknown due to 85 mph Speedometer!

I was just wondering if these Readings are within a Reasonable Margin of Error based on other Peoples experience. Thanks!

That sounds about right for my '80 GS850G with 37k and I ALSO just replaced the original speedo cable!

The speedo cable on my 850 isn't the problem. I found it in the unit on the wheel. I got this guy who is going to sell me a unit and a cable from a GS550. I am a little worried the rim size or something like that being an issue. Anybody know if this will work.

I sure wish I had your speedometer drive gear! Your indicated speeds are right on the actual speeds for my 850. I figure 14 MPH per 1,000 RPM in top gear, and that's what your speedometer is showing.

            Speed vs RPM

All your numbers are right in the same range as mine. I have a 1980 850G that is stock except for a KN replacement air filter in the stock air box. I noticed after balancing my carbs I picked up about four mph is 5th gear at the same rpm.

Yes, these numbers are the same as mine as well. I cannot speak for about 60 as I have not went there.
