GS 1000 GL Cam Chain tensioner

I hear an ugly noise at certain rpm's (around 3k). I think it's a loose cam chain.

My bike has 24k original miles. I cannot locate my old GS manual (for the original GS750).

Who can please tell me what I need to know about these tensioners?

Do all GSes use similar tensioners? On old Hondas we used to loosen a screw, turn the engine over a couple of times, then tighten it. This only sorta worked.

    Is the GS similar?

All the 2 valve GS bikes 750, 850, 1000 &1100 use an automatic cam chain tensioner. They're pretty simple & new ones are still available (for the 1000)
