    Front Sprocket Cover

    Hi All,

Can anybody tell me the function of the foam rubber behind the front sprocket cover of my 81 GSX 1100? I'm in the middle of a top end overhaul and general cleanup, and after polishing all my other covers I really can't see myself putting this one back on with 21 years of accumulated gunk behind it.

I have the same on my 78 GS1000. As far as I know, it is sound insulation. Along with the rubber ring screwed onto the countershaft sproket, it reduces the chain noise.

the expanded foam is there for noise reduction, the gunk will clean off easily with kero , then you can polish that case too. 8O
