The coils on my 79 are grey and the pos/neg wires that hook to them are separate. The 80+ are black and have a plug in connector. Does anybody know which coils will work because I can't find any that are 79 model. Any other bikes have coils that fit? thanks, mike

Coils that work with breaker point ignition should work. (pre-80)
The 80 and up uses a transistorized(breakerless) ignition. -
So will coils from a 79 and older gs 650,750,850, or 1000 work as long as its a points igntion? Thanks for the help.Comment

The newer style coils (usually 3 ohms) will work too... So check Ebay GSX early 90's, RF900, Bandit will bolt right up., just need to change the plug end cap Dyna coils are also a possibility but are a tight fit on a 550 from what I have heard.. I have the dyna 3 ohm coils on my 79GS850 & yes I still have the pointsComment
