gas leaking from one carburetor,80 gsL

I am sure i am recognized by now as being active member of this forum.My 1980 gs 1000L has a constant smell of gasoline.I have a new petcock.It isnt leaking from there.It seems to be leaking from around number one or 2 carburetor.My oil is not higher than it should be in the sight window.I dont have a gas smell in the vacuum tube.I dont have a gas smell in the oil.The gasoline accumulates in a small puddle,more like a tablespoon or so if i dont ride it often enough.I work nights and it is very dark riding to work so sometimes it sits for a week or so.I am suspectin some oring leaking.The only guy that works on old motorcycles here is too busy.I doubt i could get the carburetors off and fix the bike without screwing things up.The bike runs absolutely great.Any answers or ideas would be appreciated.I have a lot of money in the bike because i like it,not because i HAD to spend it.I most of the time get only 28-33 miles a gallon.Ron Bayless

Probably float bowl gasket or o-ring in one of the gas tubes between the carbs. They're gonna have to come off, sorry.

You can do it,Ron.Just take your time. Do you have a clymers of haynes manual?you also have lots of help right here if you get stuck. Go for it buddy!!

I think you need to look at carb issues as well as maybe ignition and timing. I have (3) 82 gs1100gls and they all get at least 45 mpg. if i go on a long trip during warm weather i can get 50.

Probably, your fuel levels are too high and or your fuel float valves are leaking. Ignition timing?? Get it all right, and maybe it will run even better.

tHANKS GUYS FOR THE RESPONSES.i WILL DEFINITELY JUST HAVE TO WAIT UNTIL THE OLD BIKE MECHANIC IS AVAILABLE.I KNOW FOR SURE I WOULD SCREW UP THE DEAL.IF HE TAKES TOO LONG I WILL GET IMPATIENT,TRY IT MYSELF,SCREW IT UP,THEN TRAILER IT TO HIM TO FIX MY SCREW UP.I CAN WORK ON CARS,NOT BIKES.AND ONLY OLD CARS.

Check your fuel hose. Maybe it's leaking from where it clamps to the T. If not it's might be a bowl gasket or as previously mentions o-rings on the fuel rail Ts. If it runs great I don't think it would be a sticky float needle.
If you can get the carbs off send them to me and I'll rebuild them. I have a bunch of carb parts and have bought, rebuilt and sold carbs on Ebay. (Not to mention my own with my desire to suck every bit of HP out of my bike)

I think I know how you feel man... my 80 gs750e is leaking fuel into the airbox as well. I am waiting on a friend to let me barrow his compression tester so I can get a benchmark on my bike for my rebuild...want to fix the base seal gasket leaking among other things this winter.

In my case everything I have read is make sure everything else is working as is should before tuning the carbs (assuming same for repairs to carbs). If all goes well my local friend might help me work on the carbs so I avoid cost..but looks like chef is demonstrating that if I get stuck I might be able to pick his brain on the subject a bit since there are so many people on here willing to give their two cents on things:-D

yes,now i rechecked,and i do have gas in my oil.cant ride it like that.now i am forced to take the carbs off.and forced to wait on someone else.dangit!
