    Replacing the rubber gasket for the gas cap.

    Anyone done this? The rubber would have to be very very close to the same thickness and of course gas proof.
    I would think a lot of people would have cap gaskets that are cracking and leaking if you want to fill 'er up completely.
    Mine started leaking just a bit the other day after a typical complete fill up. I applied some silicone spray and let it sit for about 30 minutes, then wiped off any excess. I've done this twice and it hasn't leaked at all the last few fill ups. The silicone apparently softens or swells the rubber just enough to help....for now. The gasket can also be rotated and that may help, though mine is cracking all around.

    PS: as I typed this I'm thinking Bikebandit or ? may sell a replacement gasket?? So I'll look there. I'm sure the gasket is part of the entire cap assembly and can't be bought alone if through the dealer. Thanks again.
    And on the seventh day,after resting from all that he had done,God went for a ride on his GS!
    Upon seeing that it was good, he went out again on his ZX14! But just a little bit faster!

      If I were in your position and wanted to experiment with a repair solution, based on my remarkable success with Goop products I would be tempted to try Seal-All. It's resistant to gas, oil and most solvents, and might work to seal the cracks in the rubber gasket.

      One concern that comes to mind is the prior use of silicone spray on the gasket. Silicone is so slippery that it might resist the adhesion of a sealant. On the other hand, I've had extremely good results with Shoe Goo (same as Goop) which seems to stick to almost anything and make a strong, flexible rubber-like bond. Seal-All is a different formula created to resist chemicals, and I have heard good feedback of the results from its use. I just bought a tube of the inexpensive Seal-All a few days ago, but haven't used it yet.

          gas cap gasket

          Funny you should mention it. I went to fill up, last week, and noticed my gasket was missing! I plan on measuring the filler neck and getting something close the auto parts store. Of course, I have a recently done custom painted tank! House of Kolor could turn to House of Horror!

          You can also get gasket material in a sheet and cut out your own....

              I noticed mine leaking some time back. The rubber was in good shape but the bronze spring/washer was flattened out. I took it apart ahd carefully started bending the center in. It now has a little spring to it when I put the cap back on. No leaks!

                  I tried some of that Seal-All several months ago on something.
                  I can't remember what it was now but it said it would seal against it. The stuff failed almost instantly.
                  I know there's sheet rubber out there but it will have to be fuel proof and very close to the same thickness or the cap won't seal or will be hard to install.
                  Anyone know what type of rubber it would have to be and where to get it?
                  And on the seventh day,after resting from all that he had done,God went for a ride on his GS!
                  Upon seeing that it was good, he went out again on his ZX14! But just a little bit faster!

                      Nitrile rubber sheets are the best for gasoline and it's available from http://www.mcmaster.com.

                          I made a gasket for a Katana tank a few years back and had the same materials availability problem. I cut a new gasket from leather. It sealed just fine. Gas wouldnt dissolve it either. LOL

                              If its the same as the 82 then you will have a tough time finding a replacement. The gasket is a molded rubber part which is not available separate from the cap. What I wound up doing was getting some rubber material and cutting an oversize donut shape to fit over the old gasket. I used a little RTV to glue it on. Seems to help seal it as there is less smell in the garage.

                                      I'm not sure what design your gasket is either.
                                      Mine wouldn't allow another gasket to be placed over it. You'd never get the cap to click on. Looks like that Mcmaster site is the answer.
