Stupid grip question

OK, clue me in here guys. Decided to put some new aftermarket grips on my 83 GS1100E with 7/8 handlebars. It appears that the throttle side is actually closer to 1", due to the plastic throttle cable thingamajiggy. So here's my question. How do I get a set of aftermarket grips, one a 7/8 and the other an 1"? So far, all I have been able to find are sets of each, none sold with a 7/8 and 1" in the same package. What do I have to do, buy one of each? I'm clueless..........

Is something like this my only option? These are pretty cheesy, don't the "high end" grip makers like Kuryakn make a 7/8 - 1" combo????

you could buy a set of 1" and a set of 7/8" then have two pairs of grips?

The grips come in pairs. in this case one side will be 7/8" while the other will be larger to go over the throttle sleeve.

Which is exactly what I'm trying to avoid doing.............surely I'm not the first idiot to have this problem. I just find it hard to believe they don't make GOOD aftermarket grips in this size configuration!

Not the pairs I've bought, I'm 0 for 2 !!!! One set I bought off of eBay, and they were both 7/8. The other set I picked up today at a local bike shop, and they are both 7/8!!!! I can return the second set, but I'm still confused as to why some are sold the same size, and others in two sizes!

All motorcycle grips have 2 different diameters. The smaller dia will go over the left side of the bar, and the slightly larger dia. stretches over the throttle tube. Use some black spray paint to help the grips slide much easier.

WTF? Am I reading this right? Not soapy water? Not WD40? Black paint?

For 27 years I've been using Grand Touring grips by Sunline. Had them on my Moto Guzzi and on my GS shafties. I buy them from my local Yamaha dealer, who's glad to order them for me. They're also available from Harper's on line at http://www.harpermotoguzzi.com/handlebar_grips.htm . Scroll down to "Grand Touring USA Tacki-Grips", for $15.95.

Each pair lasts me about 5 to 7 years, and they provide excellent grip and are quite comfortable. Yes, one of them is for the left handlebar and the other one for the right.

Not the two pair I just bought. They were both exactly the same size. Each one fit perfectly on the clutch side, neither would even begin to go on the throttle side.

Grips stretch. Just slide them on.

It seems counter to all reason and good sense, but it really does work to spray the inside with WD40 and slide 'em on. Its dries within a few hours, and they do not slip thereafter. Thanks to the folks on the Kawi KLR650 forum for this tip.

Also works to get 'em off - slide a stick or somethng thin and stuff under the grip, slide that little WD40 straw in the gap, spray, twist and repeat. East peasy.

Hair-spray works great.

Use the hair spray! They come of easier and dont leave a mess.I put new grips on and cannot remember if they were different sizes. Damn!!!! I hate getting old!!!Measure the I.D. and see what you come up with.

I tried WD40 on both sets, the throttle side would not go on past 1/4 way. The first set were "cushion" type grips, and by jamming them on there, they ripped through the cushion, hence my question as to the 7/8" vs. 1" difference. Guess I will get a set of 1" grips, and tape the crap out of the clutch side, or just buy a second set and have a set left over! Thanks for all the responses!!!!

Spary hair spray inside the grip and PUSH it on from the bottom.If you try to grab it and pull it on it will not work.Hold on to the handlebar and "push" from the back. I put grips on golf clubs all the time like this and it works every time.
