Transmission?

83 GS 1100 E apologies for the oversight and thanks

She had been sitting up for a couple of months.
Changed the oil and filter
I got her cranked and running fine put her in first and drove around
the yard a second.
The shifter locked in first gear. Would not shift to nuetral. I drove her around a little more and gently pushed the lever until it shifted into second. tried to push her into third and the shift lever itself turned loose and shifted into nothing. Now the transmission is stuck in second and the shifter has shifted too high to use. Even though it will rotate the shaft it is attached too the transmission does not respond and will not change.
It was cold and dark here when I got disgusted and shoved it into the barn.
I havent given it a detailed look except to make sure that everything was attached.

Anybody got any ideas where I should start?

I hope you don't have ruined splines on your shifter shaft. Let's hope it's your shifter lever. Pull off your shifter lever and have looksy. Also, how's your clutch cable and adjustment?

Hi,

If the plates stick together (commonly after a period of non-use), try change the bikes oil, then pull the clutch lever tight up to the grip and tie wrap it there overnight. Worked for me..

I had to go out of town yesterday, will pull the
shift lever this PM and check it out.
If it is the shifter splines how much fun can I look forward to?

Will give it a try. Didnt seem like the clutch was sticking
But easy enough to find out
when these bikes get this old weird stuff happens in a weird way.

Update

Again thanks for the help
took the shifter cover off of the bike yesterday
and noticed a washer and clip halfway up the shifter rod
after playing with it a while I realized that this assembly was to
keep the correct spacing on the shifter itself
ran them up tight after opening up the other side to place the
shifting assembly in the correct place
and fixed the problem
for now
