Spark Plug wires ? Ignition coil ??

OK- I have noticed a few cracks in the rubber wiring at the 90 degree bends right above the spark plug cap.

I am looking into replacing the spark plug wiring -

What does this consist of ?????

I saw this on ebay -
Does all of this have to be replaced ?

If so - who/what brand do you recommend without getting too expensive.
I saw one - Dynacoil or something but it was like $350

I wouldn't mess around with used coils. I didn't take that advice from several here because I was antsy and found one locally, but...

You can get two new coils and wires/caps on Z1enterprises.com for about $136 minus shipping. We've been discussing my woes in a separate thread (search "Still sporadic spark") where you might find some useful advice from other folks.

If you're talking about the 90 degree boot then that's part on the cap. You can find NGK at Z-1 Entreprises. I've got them on my GS and they're good. Be sure to get the same as you have now in terms of resistor vs non-resistor. The caps screw off on an '83.

Now on my 83 Suzuki says the coil and wire are one part and the wire isn't replacable. So by the time I get the wires out of the stock coil the little plastic clips that hold them on are shot. I found some 8mm wire with solid copper conductor, pushed them in and applied some silicone sealant. GOOD AS NEW.

Finding 8mm wire with solid copper conductors can be a pain. Be careful! Some places sell wire with copper coated steel conductors. Give it the magnet test before you buy.

I wouldn't bother with coils if the bikes running OK. Just replace the stuff with cracked insulators. LOL

The cracking is not in the boot part, it is actually right above where the rubber sheathed plug wire comes out of the boot.
I was just thinking of replacing before I had a problem with it.

But once I started looking I noticed
There are multiple available here -
Z1 Enterprises specializes in quality Motorcycle parts for Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki and Yamaha Classic Japanese motorcycles from the 1970's and 1980's.

        There is a :
        1.5 ohm
        2.2 ohm
        3.0 ohm
        3.0 mini ohm
        5.0 ohm

        Crap which one ???

        Also there are :
        7 mm copper core wires
        8 mm supression core wires

It looks like it is not that big of a deal to replace - but WOW - a lot of stuff out there.

I went through all this with my 1000G for the same reason.

In the end I got Dyna Green coils @ 3 ohm. 8mm Dyna Suppression wire set (includes all caps & boots). & stock NGK "8" non resistor plugs.

          Works great.

Total cost was about $145 delivered from Z1.

You might need to put a ballast in yours if you are still on points. It will work without but will wear the points quicker. Mine is an 80 & has the electronic ignition. Z1 sell Dyna's upgrade for points to electronic for about $130.

If you want to replace the coils look for some from late Bandit ,Rf900 on ebay. IF you can afford it get the new dyna green 3 ohm coils. To be technical use them with a 2 ohm balast resistor-- mid/late 70's mopar ign balist works good. That's what is on my 79GS850 Will remove the balast when I install the dyna ign/ Mounted it to the top of the cam cover/breather cover with longer bolt & a few washers. The Two 12V B+ wires for coils feed from the same source

Talked to the guy at Z1
He said go withthe 5.0 and the 7mm copper core wires.

Why would you go with a 5.0 instead of a 3 like you say ????

Because your bike uses a points ignition, it changed after 1980 I believe. A points ignition requires 5.0 ohm coils.

If your planning to update this module with a dyna s ignition (search the site) in the future, I encourage you to get a 3.0 ohm coils instead and use a resistor as SqDancerLynn1 advised, until you update the ignition.

Wait for more advice, I'm no expert.

I have a pair of good coils if you want to buy them. They are 3 ohm though. I would listen to Lynn. If you don't understand what he's trying to say just ask him. He'll clear it up for you.

Thanks man - but I do not think I need them - (Right now anyhow)
But send me a message with a price - I could take them off your hand anyhow....

                      Just went out -
CHECKED THE SPARK ON THE PLUGS.
Hoping to make sure there was nothing wrong with the COILS in 1st place.

-Pulled them, touched them to frame, they all sparked but one did not.
(Suprising enough when I pulled it out - it was BLACK and wet)
All the others 2,3,4 were nice and tanish brown.......
-I relpaced it with another one from #2 cylender and it sparked - so I am getting spark in all 4 wires.
I went to Autozone - picked up 4 new ones, checked the gap- adjusted them to the right gap - threw them on..........

At the moment SHE IS RUNNING FAR BETTER THAN I HAVE EVER SEEN HER.
(KNOCK ON WOOD WITH ME RIGHT NOW)

I can only guess that she was running on 3 cylenders for a while.

                      AMAZING.
