    carb rebuild questions and to jet or not to jet?

    I finally decided to quit playing around with my bike and to fix it. So I borrowed some money from my 401K and plan to focus most of it on the bike.

    I know my carbs need work so I bought another set to rebuild. I've read on this board NOT to get carb rebuild kits. Just get bowl gaskets, and o-rings.
    Is this correct? If so where do I aquire both?

    My other option is whether or not to jet. I have a pretty much gutted 4-1 and stock airbox. I'd like to replace the 4-1 and get the dual exhaust with turnouts and a drop in K-N. Would I need to jet with this? If so I'd rather keep the 4-1 and stock airbox to save some money. Also when I look at dynojet's website they only show a stage 3 kit.

    I've never rebuilt motorcycle carbs before but I have done cars. If jetting is as big of a pain as most suggest I'd rather not.

    There will be some other things going on such as Dyna s and coils, valve adjustment, but I'll ask more specific questions as I tackle the projects.

      What year, size and model is your bike?
      With a stock air box and 4-2 pipes you shouldn't need to rejet. But it really depends on how free flowing your new pipes are. Are they stock or aftermarket? If the pipes are new they should come with jetting recommendations, if any.

          Near enough most parts are available from www.bikebandit com, I think I have a set of CV carbs from a thou G, so if your stuck for some CV parts give me a holla.
          If it's your 1st time stripping carbs down, you'll find the easiest way to do it is video it while your stripping it and TAKE YOUR TIME.
          I used the rebuild kits before and not had a problem, it idles perfect and and runs great.
          I have a Harris 4-1 (imported from U.K) K+N filter and raised the main jet up 10 from #115 to #125.
          Doing the shims is very very easy, make sure the engine is COLD and measure thickness's between 003-008 on all inlet/exhaust.
          And use a TORQUE WRENCH to tighten everything up when completing.
          If you actually do have CV carbs, a huge TIP is to put an inline fuel stop switch on it, when the bike is not being used switch it to off, as the tank diagphram has got tendancies to leak on main and if it does and you try starting it you'll bend a crank rod.
          I bought a new tank diagphram and it's a waste of hard earned money.

          Other members on here are VERY, VERY helpful so post as much as you want and you'll get great answers to your problems.

              I'm sorry rule #1 for posting is listing the model.

              1979 gs1000l

              The dual exhaust is aftermarket. I'd rather no go that route if possible because with shipping those alone would reduce my funds by $360.

                      So what should I do? Buy the rebuild kits, or buy the bowl gaskets and O-rings?
