    Thanks for all the input--this retaining nut is just a standard L/H thread--no tricks like needing to loosen clockwise, correct??

      That's correct. The difficulty is (on mine) it hadn't been loosened since the factory installed it 25 years ago. My manual spec'd the torque at 115 lbs (I think). That's TIGHT!
