    Need to know the proper way to check valve clearances on my 85 GS550L

    I found this Suzuki Method in a previous posting:
    The Suzuki method is... (found in the archives):

    ----------------------------------
    turn crank until
    #1 exhaust cam lobe pointing forward parallel with the top of the head
    - check #1 exhaust
    - check #2 exhaust

    rotate crank 180 degrees
    #1 intake cam lobe pointing up perpendicular to the top of the head
    - check #1 intake
    - check #2 intake

    rotate crank 180 degrees
    #4 exhaust cam lobe pointing forward parallel to the top of the head
    - check #3 exhaust
    - check #4 exhaust

    rotate crank 180 degrees
    #4 intake came lobe pointing up perpendicular to the top of the head
    - check #3 intake
    - check #4 intake
    ----------------------------------

    I think it's easier to judge when a lobe is straight up, so for the steps where one lobe is supposed to be sideways, I look at the other lobe and make sure it's straight up (from the head surface). The cam retainer block thingies and bolts are good points of reference


    Is this correct?? Does this apply to all 4 cylinders??

    Does anyone know the specs an '85 GS550L ?? I've not done this before, so I'm trying to get prepared.

    I've read about shims & the like, but this engine is the 16 valve flavor so I believe I don't need them?? (Haven't taken off the covers to look yet.)

      I adjust them EXACTLY as the factory manual states.
      Just out of curiosity, I checked all reads with the cam lobes straight up (though it took more engine rotation) and got different clearance reads than when simply following the quicker, and in my opinion, more accurate, factory method.
      I don't know what the clearance range is for your '85 550. They are screw type adjuster, no shims.
      Be sure the motor is stone cold when checking. Sitting overnight is best.
      And on the seventh day,after resting from all that he had done,God went for a ride on his GS!
      Upon seeing that it was good, he went out again on his ZX14! But just a little bit faster!

          I do mine one at a time (well two with sixteen valve) with the cam lobe pointing straight up and them double check them with the cam end notch method.

              Thanks guys, I assume when you say "I adjust them EXACTLY as the factory manual states." you are referring to the Suzuki method I included with my question.

              I don't have a manual of any sort (yet), so I appoligize if my questions are basic & boring. I'll call a dealer & get the clearances,
