    8? 550 Katana

MY friend bought an 80 something katana 550 and is having engine trouble. Is this 550 possibly the same as my 82GS550L in different clothes? If so, i may be able to help him by letting him use one of my good coil packs. I havent actually seen the bike yet, so i wasnt sure if it may be the same motor.

I googled pics, and he says that it looks just like an 82 on the web.

If it is the same (or similar), i will turn him on to this site as a resource.

P.S.-The problem he is having is the two inside cylinders are cold, which led me to the assumption of the coil.

Your coil should work fine as long as it's good. Also both need to be electronic ignition.

Could be coil, could be ignitor, could be pick-up coil on the crank.

Not to be doom and gloom guy, but I bought an 82 Katana 550 for $150 with a twisted crank. #2 and #3 were not where they're supposed to be. I ended up buying and engine and frame from a 79 for $75, using the bottom end with the 82 top end.

You might be able to check with a rod of some sort through the spark plug holes. Find top dead center on 1&4 and use that measurement to check 2&3 after rotating the crank with a 19mm socket on the right side (sitting on bike).

I thought I'd share that since the same cylinders are giving him problems.
        GS\'s since 1982: 55OMZ, 550ES, 750ET, (2) 1100ET\'s, 1100S, 1150ES. Current ride is an 83 Katana. Wifes bike is an 84 GS 1150ES

550 Katana - what a beautiful machine. Quite rare in Australia and in the US as well I think. I have one in my shed, I call it the baby Kat (or is that Kitten?) LOL.

Good luck with it. Is it silver or black?
