She starts and runs; but, she has fuel dripping from the exhaust at the front of the head. I know this means I'm going to rebuild the petcock and check floats. It also means the pipes have to come back off. But, any pointers on the remount to avoid this the next time around. I've never mounted an exhaust before; so, I wasn't quite expecting the leak. And I have to say, that fire does tend to create a rather stark sense of urgency about the thing.. lol

Ok, been plowing away on the 80, 850L project. Got the engine in the frame a few weeks back. I've got a G model exhaust mounted on her and everything seemed fine, until...

I've never heard of fuel leaking out the exhaust. Are you sure? It's possible for a leaking petcock to fill up the cylinders with gas but the bike typically won't start if there is that much gas in there. In either case you shouldn't have to take the exhaust back off. Just let the gas (assuming it is) evaporate off while you dig in and fix the petcock and clean the carbs.Ed
To measure is to know.

I was thinking the same thing earlier but did not respond. Unless the bikes running on 2 or 3 cylinders and flooding out the other 1 or 2 I would suspect a stuck float valve and needle or if it is the #2 cylinder the petcock is suspect.Comment

It runs. the leak builds up right under the exhaust port for cylinder 2. So it looks as though it's coming from there whether it is or not. And the bike is running. But, it's only running on the two outside cylinders, of the inner two, 2 stays cold and 3 fires occasionally. Pipe 3 is warm to touch; but not "hot".Comment

See, this is why I like you folks.. I've seen fuel backup into the airbox (which isn't happening). I haven't seen it come pouring down the front of the bike. Ok, pouring is probably an exaggeration; but, when it runs down and erupts into flames, it gets the blood goin..
So, the collective opinion seems to be, leave the pipes alone and work on the fuel flow.
Thanks guys!!!!Comment

Petcock is fixed. That has stopped the major leak; but, it looks like the carbs definitely need work. She runs and she now idles at 1100rpm; but, she doesn't want to rev past 3k without bogging and nearly dying. Guess I know what my next day off will consist of now..Comment

You got it. Been having problems getting an L model airbox to seal to a G model carb rack. Fought and finally got it on; but, it appears the boots slipped off again... Ready to chuck the bloody airbox and go to pods. And I don't like the look of pods.Comment

So the fact that I've got pods on my bike may actually make people think I know what I'm doing? Cool!
Actually, since the bike came with a V&H and no airbox, I figured WTH I'm going to have to rejet anyway, might as well throw the pods on it. I personally like the look, but to each their own.Comment
