    Brake Squeal

The front brakes on my 1979 GS 750L like to squeal. Stopping ability is pretty good, but I hate the sqeal. Seems to be worse when it is hot outside.

What would be a good upgrade for the front brakes on this bike.

    Thanks,

    Greg O.

I get a slight squeal on my front brakes and I clean them with brake cleaner. Takes care of it for a week or so. I think it's caused by accumulation of brake dust or cheap pads.

      Chef,

My discs are the solid type, are yours the vented type? I think they changed in 1980.

Brake cleaner is your friend!!! remove the caliper; do NOT remove the brake line or release the fluid, remove the brake pads. thoroughly wash everything with the brake cleaner, apply a very light smear of "silastic" to rear of pads and re-assemble.

          Silastic?
Silicone grease is a good choice, applied very lightly, on the back side of the pads - lets the parts slide and not chatter which is what causes squeak.

I use the anti-squeal brake pad stuff they sell at the auto parts store and my brakes havent squeeked since. That's been about 2 years ago.I also take them out and clean them in brake cleaner every 3000 miles.

Is there a brake system that is better than the original equipment?

I put Vesrah pads on both of my bikes and they squealed like no other...I hated it!

I talked a bit with Michael Moore from Vintage Brake www.vintagebrake.com - the guys an older vintage bike racer, knows his stuff. He sold me a set of Ferodo Platinum pads for my 1100 and not only are they softest pad you can buy, they don't squeal.

                  I reccomend them hands down.

Michael also hooked me up with a pretty fair deal on some nice stainless steel brake lines. You can get the fittings cheaper through Parts Unlimited (any motorcycle dealer) but his lines were fair.
