Question on Mikuni 29 rebuild

Hi all. I recently purchased a 1979 GS1000 :-D and rebuilt the carbs. I'm new to the site and have a question regarding my Mikuni 29s.

In addition to the fuel tubes, ports on carbs #1 & #2 and #3 & #4 are connected via an additional short piece of tube. When I reassembled everything I couldn't find the short section of hose that ran from carb #2 to carb #3 (I figured it had been accidentally thrown away), so I cut a piece of fuel line and placed it between these two carbs.

When I attempted to attach the throttle spring I found that the spring and the tube wanted to occupy the same space. I referred to some pictures I had taken prior to disassembly and saw that #2 and #3 were connected only by the fuel tube and the ports above the fuel tube were uncovered.

My question: Do these ports need to be capped/plugged, connected to each other, or left alone?




Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I don't have 29's but the 22 VM's on my '79 550 do not connect the ports you are pointing at. I think the ports in question are not drilled through - try poking a piece of wire in the port to see if they are drilled through.

Not sure this helps but a photo of my 550 carbs is below. Note - throttle linkage is in a different place.

Using a long piece of fuel line I was able to blow air through each port with the throttle open. I can't say at what position the ports opened.

Hey Chris,

Those ports are float bowl vents. Opening the throttle shouldn't make any difference.

Thanks for your assistance. I don't know what I was smoking yesterday. I just stuck stuck a piece of fuel line on each port and was unable to draw air through either. Feeling slightly retarded. Question resolved. Ports are plugged.

Those are 26mm carbs NOT 29's
