Okay, I'm confused
You can reach redline in top gear, or not?
If you're going 80 in top gear, it's redlined?
Can you redline it in any gear while you're riding?
What do the plugs look like? Post a picture1978 GS 1000 (since new)

1978 GS 1000 (parts)
1981 GS 850 (anyone want a project?)

Your clutch is slipping, sounds like.Current Rides: 1980 Suzuki GS1000ET, 2006 H-D Fatboy, 2021 BMW K1600BComment

Ditto on the clutch!
Sure sounds like a slipper of a clutch!
High speed/high revs is pretty typical place to see 'em slip ona GS.

Different wet clutch. C'mon Dave! Give us a break! ;-)
Don't worry, the guys just blowing smoke.
So what you're saying is going down the road at 80 MPH you tach is redlined? Either you're in third gear or you clutch is slipping BIG TIME!!!
Either your clutch cable is adjusted too tight, bad clutch springs, worn clutch fibers or glazed clutch steels or E all of the above.Comment

It's all in the perception
Mr. gsx/gs biker,
Perhaps your tachometer or speedometer is not reading properly. The gauges do go bad sometimes. My speedo would dance around all over the place, reading 85mph with the tach at only 5000 revs (which should be 70mph). A little cleaning, a little lubrication and it worked much better.
Thank you for your indulgence,
