How to tell what year the motor is??

I have a gs1000 motor that I am putting in the a moto cross frame :-D but before I do that I am going rebuild the motor. Does anyone know how I can figure out what year my engine is?? So I can get the right gaskets and seals.

the repair manual (for my 850) lists all the frame/engine numbers and corresponding years of manufacture

This will give you some sort of an idea. My 79 GS1000 engine s/n is 122364 so yours is a little older than that.

All the gasket sets are the same for the GS1000 8-valve, with exception probably to the shaft drive model.

Your engine is most likely a 78

Hard to be exactly sure, since Suzuki did not match frame and engine serial numbers. But Bruce is probably right, you have a '78.

All my '78 GS1000 motors have the following serial numbers. 111986, 123070, 107883, 101492, 116835. (wow, I got a lot of iron in the garage!)
