What is wrong with this picture?

I should also note that there have been a few pleasant surprises with this bike. We got the usual box of "stuff" that tends to accompany a bike along with the Windjammer fairing, complete with the Cycle Sound radio housing and radio. (I have not tested the radio yet, but they are cheap and easy to replace.) The previous owner (Max) pointed out a couple of oil filter boxes, horns, highway pegs, fairing mounting bracket, mirrors and other stuff. All well and good. My son was poking around, looking inside the oil filter boxes and found that one of them did not have a filter in it. Instead, he found four NEW carb diaphragms. \\/

I then found a key in my vast collection that would open the locked compartment of the Windjammer. In there, I found a receipt from the Suzuki dealer in New Haven, Connecticut for rear brake pads AND THE BRAKE PADS. :shock: Guess what I happened to 'need' when working on the rear brakes? Yup. Nice to not have to spend anything on the bike (yet), other than gas money to get it home. 8-[

Other niceities found so far include a K&N element in the stock airbox, Accel coils and a balance tube for the air forks. Closer examination of the baffle in the muffler shows that it is not a straight-through design like the MAC "silencer" we have on the 650. All the exhaust is directed down the narrower perforated tube in the middle, but there is a solid disk in the middle of that tube, forcing all the exhaust to go through the perforations, into the outer chamber, then back through the rear set of perforations and out the end of the muffler. I can't wait to hear this thing run properly.

Special 850

I think the "Special 850" would be from a Yamaha 850 Special which is a triple from the mid 80s, which I have only seen pictures of in old magazine ads. Dont specifiaclly know what year, so is that close enough for a prize? You did say there was a prize, right?


About the "GS850" emblem (without the G, without the L): I say 78 or 79 only because both years are listed for 850G in the model chart elsewhere here on GSR. I do know of the 79s, I personally dont know of 78s, maybe 78s were not in US. And I do know that the 79 850G had the emblem that just said "GS850".

Yes, it is from a Yamaha 850 Special. However, it was only made in '80 and '81. Yamaha came out with a 750 triple in '76. It lasted with only a few changes until '79, then they bored it out a bit to make it 850 in '80. The 850 only lasted two years.

Prize? I don't remember mentioning anything about a prize. When I was in school, there were no prizes for pop quizzes. Closest I can do is to give you a (barely) passing grade. You got the make and model, and were close on the year. 8-[

I was not aware of the obvious gold content in the diaphragms. I knew they weren't cheap, but I just got diaphragms for my son's Venture Royale, and they were only 57.00 each.

just to add a bit - i had one of those triples, 750, and it was manufactured in '80
also, even though identical to "special" mine had the emblems reading "us custom" in colors of usa flag
the speedo was still in kms not miles
