When you say "intake boots" do you mean the boots on the airbox side or the engine side of the carbs?
If you changed the ones on the engine side, did you also put in new o-rings?
Those plugs are showing a dangerously lean condition, don't run the bike until you fix it.

IMO, MUCH better than the Clymer books (I have both). Should take less than 2 weeks to arrive - well, that's what it takes to get to this end of the planet - should be less for the US...'07 Yamaha TTR 250 - Exercycle.

Mark the spark plug with a black sharpy facing directly out. Pull out the plug and face the mark towards you. If the dark side is facing the intake side you have a bad valve guide or oil stem seal on the intake side. If it's facing the exhaust side .......
That is if it's oil.Comment

The black soot looks like a normal response to running rich, most likely running with the choke on. It's not oil so don't worry about that.
As I mentioned before in your other thread, 25 year old carbs are not a stable foundation to build a nice running bike from. You will be way ahead of the game if you bite the bullet, order an o-ring kit, and clean the carbs out proper like.Ed

yes,it still has stock air box/filters on it.the o rings did not come with the new boots,so the dealer went in back and found some generic rings.thats probally the culprit.and or the clamps that hold the carbs to the boots are stretched out. thanks for your repliesComment

My reference is to the O-rings inside the carbs. They dry out and get hard. Needless to say the o-rings on the carb boots are critical as well.Ed

What Nessism is saying is that you need to:
1. Go to cycleoring.com. Order the O rings for your carb set. Order the O rings that go between the intake boot and the head.
2. Read up in the carb section about cleaning your style of carb
3. Pull the carbs, get some carb cleaner and get to work
4. Install the new O rings in the carbs
5. Install the new O rings between your boots and head
6. Reinstall carbs
7. Run ,check results
Your bike is running so lean that you will cause damage to the motor running it as is1978 GS 1000 (since new)

Check the screen in the tank, on the fuel petcock, also check to see the fuel is flowing properly. Might be restricted and causing intermittant lean outs.1981 GS650G , all the bike you need
