Speedo / Ratio Questions ?

Hi All

My GS550 chop is fitted with one of these :



The blurb of the speedo say's it's a 2:1 ratio - whatever that means.

All I know is that it's very inaccurate after 40mph - anyone know why this would be ?

The needle was bouncing all over the place, so I oiled the cable - it now stops bouncing, but still reports me as doing around 110mph when I'm only doing 65/70 mph... (and I know my chop isn't all that fast ;-) )

I'm guessing it could be the speedo drive (in the front wheel) that's screwed ? or could it just be this speedo clock is wrong for the bike ?

(sprayed the back of the clock with a load of wd40, oiled the cable, and sprayed a bunch of wd40 inside the speedo drive itself - still not change)

My guess would be that it's the wrong speedo for the bike.

What you could to make sure is get one for the bike, your old one if you have it still, and just temporarily slap it on and see how the correct one reads. Then you'll know.

Could well be the wrong speedo / ratio, but it's the only one that came with the bike :shock:

Could just be the speedo itself is broken I guess - they're pretty cheap / nasty these little ones - might just have to buy a nice digital one :-D

I was told that all japanese bikes run a 2240 : 60 speedo ratio. The 2:1 speedo runs 2000 : 60. I have a 2:1 on my gs, and its off. The 2:1's are made for harleys with front wheel driven speedos. The difference between the two would be at 30mph it reads about 33mph, at 60 it should read about 68 and at 120 it should read over 135mph. Not sure if all japanese bikes run 2240 : 60 because my friend runs a 2:1 on his yamaha xs and claims its fine. But i am going to switch mine out with a 2240 : 60 and sell my 2:1 to a yamaha rider.

That sounds liked a dragging speedo in the head. If the cable was skipping I don't see how it would get up to 110MPH.

If you're a "buy it new" guy, that would be the first choice.

If you're a "not 'till they pull the wrench from my cold dead fingers" guy, it is possible to pry the bezel off and get at the works. You'll find an aluminum cup on the end of the speedo cable, and a small magnet that should be completely free that is dragged by the spinning cup for the speed indication.

You can do a fairly good home calibration when you re-assemble it by spinning the input with a variable-speed drill set to turn the trip odo over at one mi. every minute, then push the needle on at 60 MPH.

You can check the ratio by seeing if the odo. is correctly calibrated.
