    Rear wheel bearing question

Good evening. I have yet another rear wheel bearing question for you.

    I have a 77 GS750B.

I pulled the rear sprocket off the drive plate tonight. There is a bearing in the drive plate that I would like to replace. I think the bearing should come out to the outside of the drive plate (toward the sprocket side, not the wheel side) but there is a rubber (I think it is rubber) oil seal in the way.

Do I remove the oil seal to get the bearing out? If so, any suggestions/directions on how. My Clymer's manual shows a picture of the bearing and the oil seal but otherwise provides no information about them.

I thought I might drive the bearing out past the oil seal without removing it but I thought I better check in here first before I started doing anything I wasn't 100% sure of. I'm not even really sure I can get the bearing out without first removing the oil seal.

Really appreciate any advise and/or suggestions.

    Thanks!

Use a large screwdriver like a drift and tap out the bearing towards the sprocket side. The bearing and oil seal will come out.

...or just do like I did and wait until the bearing blows apart at high speeds. Then you just have to scoop the bits out. (Please don't do what I just said to do.)

Just done this myself.... as a tip, get yourself a bucket to put this & the wheel on, makes things a lot easier.

Couldn't get my wheel bearings out so waiting on a "Pit Posse" kit at the moment. This one behind the cog is easy though.

Bearing kit incl seal is $22 at Z1.

What he said but go easy on your screwdrivers. Get a devoted drift...

Thank you very much. I'll try this today at lunch.

HA! This is what I'm trying to avoid. Although the prospect of just scooping out all the little bits has some appeal

Thanks for the tip. I would not have thought of the bucket trick. What is a pit posse? I bought the same $22 bearing kit from Z1. Just waiting for it to show up. Might be here today.

              Thanks for the help gents!

Thanks for all the info. I couldn't wait until lunch to try it out. I wasn't getting much satisfaction until I pried the oil seal off. It came off easy enough. Then I was able to punch the bearing out with my drift.

Now I just have to wait patiently until my new bearings, sprockets, and chain arrive. Hope they get here before the weekend!

Thanks again for all the help!

Now that looks like a very good tool. I may need to add one of those to my collection. However, if I'm lucky there won't be many more bearing replacements in my near future. <fingers crossed>

                    Thanks!
