Cleaning out an engine

I have a bike I am trying to restore. The carbs are missing, and the PO put plastic bags in where the mainifold openings were. I took them out to discover dirt and pine needles are resting inside :shock:

Do I have to take it apart and clean it? Can that stuff be vaccuumed out?

I found another one like it (parts bike) for $500

only thing wrong with the parts bike is the head gasket is blown. I have never replaced a head gasket before and am wondering, between the two bikes, I should have a pretty decent one with spare parts to boot.

BTW, I just vacuumed out the dirt. Valves were closed so nothing actually got "in" the engine. I poured seafoam in it and gonna let it free up the rust.

No all intake valves were closed. The rust is in the chamber. Its not rotted, just like a rust film.

I haven't taken cam cover off. I will check tmw and take pics.

I was looking around the net for tips and tricks on cleaning rust from engine parts (take a look at the rust remover pics on Navy Engine Restoration)

No all intake valves were closed. The rust is in the chamber. Its not rotted, just like a rust film.

On a four cylinder engine it's not possible for all the intake valves to be closed at the same time unless the intake came was removed. Don't mean to create worry but their is certain to be dust and crud in one or two cylinders.

The carbs and intake pipes were removed and he stuffed plastic bags in the chambers. I am pretty sure I will have to clean out the engine after seeing dirt and pine needles in the chambers yesterday.

Try vacuuming out the crud in the cylinders with a small tube connected to a vacuum cleaner.
Work through the spark plug hole, you can drop a flashlight bulb on a wire down inside if you need to to help you see.
once the stuff is all out soak the cylinders with MMO and let it sit, then give it a try.

On the other hand, pulling the head is not that big a deal.
