    missing ground?

On my 82 650gl the metal batteryholder has two wires grounded to it one of them is broken off and i dont know where it goes and the other goes to the battery terminal. What does the missing wire go to?

It's probably used as earth for most of the rear electrical componets.

have a look at basscliff's website for a wiring diagram (not the exact one for your bike but should help)

Is it black/white? If so, it's probably is used to ground your R/R.

The two blk/wht wires that are connected to batterybox, on the solenoid mounting bolt, right?
I had a 650G (notGL) for 20+ years, never had any such problem that I had to investigate much of the electrical system.
My recollection from my 850G and 1100GK are as follows:
          - One will be the ground wire for the R/R. (If that is missing, you should find it. You should check your charging/battery voltage. May be way too high without the R/R being grounded).
          - Other one should go into the wiring harness (along with other wires to/from fuse box). I think that is the wire that should go to someplace on the frame to provide a better ground for the battery box.

I would think you want to find your R/R (side of under battery box). Stock one will have 4 wires in one harness and a seperate ground wire.

SOme aftermarket R/R will not have a ground wire, just expect that the case is bolted to the bike frame and have a good ground that way, that is what they are expecting. But... GS battery box not such a good ground.

Given the above situation of the R/R being grounded to the battery box but the battery box not really well grounded: It is a common thing (no pun intneded) for people to add thier own ground wire from the that point the r/r is grounded and run it directly to the battery neg. Perhaps that is what you are seeing.

I suggest you look for your R/R, look for the R/R ground wire.
ANd sometime before too long, measure your battery voltage with engine at mid rpms.
