I always torque up when first doing the job - for accurate torque readings make sure the threads are clean and lubricated with a drop of light oil and check after a decent hot run (but with engine cold) and then check after a few hundred miles.79 GS1000S

So what’s the consensus on how to retorque head bolts as part of regular maintenance? Loosen nuts ? turn first? I’m a little concern about loosening up the clamp load on a 28 year-old head gasket for fear of springing a leak.Ed

After 28 years I think it's pretty safe to assume that everything has settled down! (I hope that's not the kiss of death and your leaking all over the place tomorrow). Also, for head nuts, I never back off - it's the only time (that I can think of) when I wouldn't. I know there's a risk of a false reading but I consider that less than the risk of unsettling the head seating.79 GS1000S

I re-torqued mine after the first hot cycle (after return to dead cold) , and plan to do it again at 500 miles along with a valve check. I don't loosen a full 1/4 turn. I just barely crack them loose, just enough that they will tighten with the torque wrench before it clicks.Comment

Thanks to all for your input. After all the work to replace the gasket I don't want it leaking again.Comment
