So my new baby wont start.

Since i bought and safetied the bike, i've put approx. 100 km on it
without problem. This afternoon, when trying to sneak home for a quick
lunch ride, the bike wouldn't start.

It'll turn over just fine, and the headlights are nice and bright. I'm
getting spark from the 1 and 4 cylinders (I didn't test the other two,
though i'm assuming they are fine. the battery is new, as are the spark
plugs)

When i popped out the plugs, they were pretty dry, and the cylinders
didn't smell particularly of gas, so i'm thinking it's a fuel delivery
problem.

A couple of questions for you (i don't have my clymer manual yet, it's on
order)

What are the most likely culprits? I'm going to check the lines as much as
i can, the filter (i'm assuming there is one) The gas is fresh, and
there's been nothing added to it that i know of (it ran fine for the first
half of the tank)

Any ideas?

My thought would be rust or varnish from the tank jamming up the fuel flow either at the petcock or the carbs. It sounds like you are on your first tank of gas. If the bike set awhile before you bought it crud could have formed. If you didn't put in a fuel filter before you ran it I think that would be the problem. Just my 2 cents worth. Good luck.

i know it may sound stupid, but don't forget about the start cut-out switch on the handlebar...has happened to me a couple times.... :twisted:

I'm trying to figure out why my bike won't start.

Here's what i've done so far:
- Changed the spark plugs (they have spark)
- Checked to make sure the airfilter isn't blocked (it's not)
- Checked the vacuum tube to the petcock (it's not blocked)
- Checked that the petcock works.


I took off the tank, but i couldn't reach the the fuel tap (there's the big airbox collector thing there) so i pulled the carbs... and lo and behold, fuel poured out of them.

Damnit. I checked and the line was fine. I've replaced it with neoprene anyway, and added a new fuel filter.

Before i put the carbs back on, what should i check on the carbs?

Could the fact that they were totally full of gas stop the bike from starting?

I think having the same problem. Putting starter fluid in the carbs allowed it to fire up, then die. I haven't tried replacing fuel filter/pump, think those are worth a shot? I've only had it a couple weeks, so gas tank corrosion is possible. I'm not much of a mechanic, but I'll let you know if I figure out what is wrong with mine.
