Are there any alternatives to the factory solenoids on the gs1100 gl?

There is no need why you need to keep a genuine part for the solenoid. Any similar sized starter solenoid from a wrecker will do as a replacement, as long as it fits into the space allowed --- and as long as you wire it up properly.

You'll see that numerous people here, including myself, are using a solenoid from a riding lawn tractor. You can find one for any where between $10-16. Mine has been working great. While your in that area, add a ground from the battery to the electronic mounting board. You will be amazed at the results.
