when you add pods (question on the boots)
i assume they mount on the carb directly with clamps?? i want to add these a stage 3 DJ kit and a VH pipe either drag or street. plan to replace all the orings from cycleorings as well. now this is on a 82 850 with -14k.

Yes, they mount directly on the carbs with clamps (provided).

You will definitely feel a performance gain. You will also lower your gas mileage a little bit. -

cool the PO put a K&N filter in the one that fist in the stock clamp but i dont have the foam portion and i dont see how it works properly as there is a gap from the filter to the inlet in the box so im probly just sucking in unfiltered air?? he cut a piece of cardboard to make a gasket sorta but it didnt look like it was doing anythingComment

Figure on $100 for a jet kit and another $150 for K&N pods - $250 to gain about 2 hp.Ed

Don't tell him how much I've spent.
I need an extended swing arm to keep from staring at the clouds.
I do believe it's a little more than 2 HP. Nessie's in a bad mood cause it rained in L.A today. ;-)Comment

I use the example of me vs. Tom_MLC in the dyno drag run when his '78 1000 was still stock and mine had the pods, jet kit and pipe. I was beating him consistently by about 1 second in the 1/4 mile.Comment

Okay Bill, 2.01 hp extra.8-[
Yea, I'm grumpy about moding old classic bikes. Just about any modern bike will run rings around our GS bikes so why bother spending all the money and messing up the carburation just to add a few HP at the top end of the rev range? Pods need a header to take advantage of the increased air flow, so that adds another $300 to the cost. Just doesn't make sense unless your stock exhaust/air box is shot and you have no options left.Ed

Bruce did you spray paint your engine or is it just clen. If spray what type and color or paint code did you use. I need to spray mine to get it to look decent while I have it apart.
Cheers. Don.Comment

I scrubbed mine clean with Simple Green Concentrate, toothbrushes and baby bottle brushes. I had to go over it several times.
If you need to paint it, I hear the Por-15 paint is the way to go.Comment

Yeah, 2 HP will get you at least a second in the quarter-mile! :---)
Just doing some rough math: 500 pound motorcycle, 100 horsepower. Each horsepower has to move 5 pounds of motorcycle weight. Save 20 pounds of exhaust/airbox weight = 4 horsepower effective gain, before any actual horsepower gains from the pipe, PODs, and jet kit.
Thanks,
