very high oil temps

My first post!
I just bought an '82 GS750 and I went riding/cruising today to get used to the bike.
I have an oil temp gauge on my bike and I live in Canada so it is in celcius. The oil temp gauge kept rising on my ride until it hit just above the 160C (320F) mark. Ambient temp was around 30C or ~90F. I took it on the highway for a few miles and the temp never dropped much if any. I was not riding it hard at all.
I am wondering how accurate this gauge is and if anyone would know where the sensor is located as I couldnt find it in any of my manuals. Could it be that someone installed an american version of the sensor by mistake?? or the gauge is in F even though it says C on the gauge?
I am going to find a thermometer and check the accuracy asap before i cook the engine.
I really like the idea of an oil cooler, I eill be looking into it.

Gear, was your bike running right on your cruise....in terms of power etc. If you have the Suzuki shop manual, I think they have a procedure to check the gauge . I would think the sensors are the same on both U.S. and Canadian models...only the gauge dials are different. Is your bike stock, or has it been modded with 4x1 exhaust/pod filters etc....maybe it has not been jetted right.
I just got back from a 2 hour ride, and I barely registered 100C on the temp gauge, though ambient was around 26C....I do have a cooler installed though.
Renobruce on this board sells temp gauges for the GS's, in case you find the stock one faulty.

The bike has stock filters, exhaust etc.
It ran fine during the cruise.
I am going to pull a plug and see if it is running lean.
I know where the oil pressure sensor is. Are the two sensors in the same place (oil filter cover)? I have an idiot light for low oil pressure and a oil temp gauge.

With the gauge reading about 130C (266F), I put a temp gauge all over the engine and couldnt get over 210F so I think the sensor or gauge or both is messed up. Does anyone know if the sensors are available new?

Are you reading oil temp at various places on the engine? Measuring the metal temp is not the same thing - metal will be cooler except for right on top of the cylinder head.

I temped it all over including the head area.
I pulled the plugs and two had too wide gap. The insulators were brown with black sooty stuff on the edge by the threads.
