    outer clutch basket movement

I had my clutch cover off a couple weeks ago to replace the springs. I didnt take the hubs off as i didnt have the correct socket.
BUT as i was inspecting it, I noticed that i am able to rock the outer clutch basket from side to side enough to make me worried. Should i be able to rock it side to side like that? From what i see it rides on needle bearings and i wouldnt think they would allow that much play.
    Thanks in advance.

no, you shouldnt be able to rock the basket
make sure the centre nut is torqued to the spec

Ditto, the guys here tell me that nut is cheap and will actually strip and come loose. There is a $25 APE or Fast By Gast nut that is highly recommend.

The nut is tight and the inner basket doesnt move, just the outer basket.

time to open it up and inspect the parts for wear, the roller bearing a prime suspect, unless theres a missing part

This is a fairly common issue where the rivets on the clutch basket back plate get sloppy and the springs wear on the backplate as well. You need to pull the basket and look at the back side. Lot of info in the archives on this issue. It normally occurs on the 1000 and 1100 but obviously can happen on other engines as well.

Edit: check out this thread which shows a high performance clutch hub - rivets are replaced by welding since it's more reliable.

I took it apart today and the bearing and races looked fine. There are 6 springs on the back, 3 heavy, 3 light and the heavy ones are a bit loose. Accounts for the rattle i guess? The rivets didnt seem sloppy, but i could turn the basket without the gear moving a little.
The clutch slips even at part throttle and i measured the fibers and they were all around 2.8mm. I just put in new stock springs. One manual i read says the limit is 2.4 mm and another says it is 2.6mm
I roughened up the steels with 220 grit. Anyone know how thick a new fiber is?

yes, the back plate loose springs would account for the rattle

the fibers/steels/springs shouldnt have to do with the lateral basket movement you're describing
with the plates in spec, the slipping would be due to the weak springs (other than a wrong oil)

Ya I put in new stock springs. The old ones were 38 -38.5 or so. New ones were only 39 or so. Maybe someone put in teflon additive oil in it at some time.
I dont think that the outer clutch movement is all theat bad, at least i dont think it will leave me on the side of the road, which i was worried about.
I want to rebuild it like the picture shows, there is a tutorial about that i read, grinding off the rivets, putting spacers on the springs, then welding it back together.
What thickness are stock fibers?? anyone know?

Basscliff has a manual that will have the spec.

As its apart change the needle bearings in the clutch. Also get a new tab washer that holds the centre nut on.

                      Clutch spring 1.54 - 1.59 inch 39.0-40.5MM standard 1.46inch 37.1 mm limit.
                      Drive plate 0.10 - 0.11 inch 2.7 - 2.9mm standard 0.009 in 2.4mm limit.
Drive plate distortion 0.008in 0.2mm service limit
Driven plate distortion 0.004in 0.01mm service limit.

Drive plate is the one with the lugs on, driven plate is the one with teeth in the inner.

                        Thanks,
sounds like what I have read from some manuals.
Don't know why my clutch slips so much as my fibers are ~2.8mm and i just put in new springs. Using regular oil no additives 10w40. My steels maybe warped, I didnt measure them. Just ordered all new fibers and steels with EBC springs. Should have added a new bearing to the order.
