Faulty GS1000S fuel guage.

Hi,
I have a 1980 GS1000S and my problem is that the fuel guage reads full all the time. I have removed the tank and joined the 2 sender wires on the loom which also gives me a reading of full. The manual says it should do this and it points the finger at the sender being faulty. Also when the wires are not joined, the needle on the guage creeps slowly up to almost halfway. If I put the lights on the needle almost stops but it very very slowly creeps up. I took the sender out and measured the resistance, which at empty is 11-16 ohms, the manual says 0.5-5ohms, and at full it reads 120-125ohms where the manual says 113-118. I didn't think they were too far out for a nearly 30 year old bike but I don't know.
I will check again in the headlight for a bad earth but I'm a bit baffled as to the cause or causes.

Don't worry about it.Mines been dead for ever.Just use your trip meter to tell you when your tank is getting low.Cheers,Simon.

check your wiring.. mine was grounding out in the headlight bucket and always showing full.

Tried a few different things....

I still have the sender out of the tank and I tried various scenarios with it tonight. I checked all the wiring going and coming from it, opened up the little resistor jobbie on the sender. everything looks ok - even just wired it up itself and disconnected the earth from the battery, earthed the battery through the fuel guage and the same happened, leading me to believe that the earth is ok. the guage on the clocks obviously works so all I'm really left with is the sender. My buddy was out with me while we were doing it and low and behold, he rides a standard GS1000. He's gonna bring his out tomorrow evening and disconnect his tank and wire it to my bike and see what happens. His works so it will tell a tale.

Fault found.

Got as far as I'm gonna get. The fuel guage although on my S is of an earlier bike as the fairing has been removed. The fuel guage that had been in it originally when I got the bike had broken. I renewed the rev counter complete as that was the easiest option. The guage inside the clock is faulty. My mate brought his GS1000 out and I checked the sender on it and it worked perfectly. All the wiring is correct with good earths all round. I'm selling the bike anyway and after all it has reserve on the tank.I'll let whoever buys it know and if they want they can pick up a rev counter relatively cheap on the likes of ebay.
I enjoyed getting my paws dirty finding out about it.
