    Exhaust Clamp at the Head

I am starting to clean up the rust off the exhaust of my 1979 GS850 using some of the methods mentioned on GSR (aluminum foil). I am wanting to order new exhaust clamps that hold the exhaust on to the head. Mine are all rusted. Is there any way to remove the clamps from the exhaust header without cutting the exhaust? I don't think there is but again i'm also new at this.

nope, unless its an aftermarket exhaust that allows you to do so. elbow grease is your best answer

Damn it, i was thinking that but didn't know if there were some hidden trade secret to it. It is the stock exhaust and i don't want to go to the 4 into 1 either.

Evapo-Rust is the ticket for jobs like this. Harbor Freight sells the stuff for $20 a gallon and it's reuseable so it lasts a long time. I cleaned up some GS550 header flanges and they turned out like new. Of course, the plating is going to be compromised since they have rusted in the first place but if you hit them with some clear header paint after you clean them up they will last for a good while.

You have to take the exhaust off the bike to clean them properly. Also, Evapo-rust works kind of slowly so it will take a few days to soak - dump the stuff in a bucket and you might be able to do two at a time.

Trust me on this one, Evapo-Rust is the right stuff for that job.

              Good luck.

The "Billy Mays" of Evapo-Rust. Good pitch Ed.

I bet it really works too.

                  Billy Mays?

Evapo-Rust is one of the snake oil products that actually works. Who would have thunk?
