GS1000 bolt question...
What is the purpose of the bolt circled below in red on a GS1000 engine between the clutch and ignition covers?

The purpose of the bolt is to plug the hole behind it.
The hole behind it is part of the oil gallery, and is a good location to mount an oil pressure gauge.

You can not use that point as your oil pickup since it will rob oil that needs to go to the top end.Ed

Just my opinion, but I wouldn't. This cavity is where the oil resides after it has gone via the oil pump and then through the filter. From there the oil goes to the pressure switch directly behind it and also up the galleries to the cylinder head and camshafts. It could result in a pressure drop at this point and the result could be a lack of oil in the top end.
But as I say, Just my personal opinion.
Some others more knowledgeable than I may have a differing opinion.

You need one of these oil cooler adapters, or mod yours like Tom did. I think Nessism makes an adapter? I know Terry from Oz makes one, too.

Basscliff's site hosts a "make your own oil cooler take off" tutorial I put together. Pretty darn easy, and it should only cost you a few bucks to make if you are so inclined.
If you don't want to hassle, there is always Terry's adapter from Oz, or there are a couple of adapters on ebay right now.Ed

Thanks for the help guys. Glad I asked about the oil pickup from the oil pressure gauge bolt before I seized the motor.
There's an older version of one of Terry's adapters in the garage (thanks to Tom
). Anyone know what thread size/pitch Terry uses on his adapters?
On Tom's bike it looked like this:

My guess is 1/4" NTP (pipe thread). I wouldn't use it if it's smaller.Ed

The pic I posted is from Tom's 1000 (with the fittings on the oil filter cover). The pic you posted is from Tom's 1100 (notice the CV carbs).
So the bottom line is:
If you don't want the lines to go over the engine or along the side of the engine, you need to do the mod as I posted on Tom's 1000. If you don't mind the hoses, you need an adapter like mine, like Terry makes, or make your own like Nessism has done.Comment
