    Wiring harness

I have an 82' GS850GZ and I can grab a NOS 1980-1981 GS850 wiring harness. Will that harness be the same as mine now if I were to change them?

If they're not the same they're pretty damn close. Are the part numbers the same?

BTW, I bought a '80 GS1000G harness for my '80 GS1000E and it's identical except for the gauges connector. A little cut and solder to get the old E gauge connector on should fix that right up.

One that I know of is that the '82 had a light in the tach for side stand status.
Obviously, the '80/'81 harness will not accomodate that.

        harness

old bikes, old harness...I have rewired many bikes with 7 wire trailer cord. (14 wires to headlight for those that have a shift indicator). The old cotton covered british harnesses really needed it. The neat part is that truck trailer cord has very hardy neoprene cover for the steering head bit. Use 4 wire from head to tail/turn/stop. Get a wiring diagram before you start.

Okay, there is another one that is an 82 GS1100E. Will that fit? I am not really the best at following a wiring diagram to replace my whole harness. About 6-7 months ago I started to put new connectors on because I had bought a new stator and an RR. Almost every time I would splice the end to put a new connector on, I wouldn't be able to get all the wires out to make a new connector. So I would just keep on splicing little by little until I could get all the copper to make a solid connector. Each pin connector in the headlight housing have basically formed into one instead of two and cannot separate it. All my wires are 27 years old.

I think some of the items around the battery box are re-arranged a bit, but might not be so far off that it can't be used.

Would be really nice if you had pictures of an 850 and 1100 so you could compare component locations.

Matchless refurbed his wiring harness and seems to have done a nice job. You might want to check out this thread and drop him a message to get more info on what he did. http://www.thegsresources.com/_forum...d.php?t=127908

If you need connectors and such check out this place. http://www.vintageconnections.com/ No personal experience but it seems like a good resource.

The prices are good at vintage connections and while I haven't gotten my order from them yet kudos on their response time. I ordered on Saturday about 5:00 and within an hour had a ship notification. They have the OEM bullet connectors, they have the sleeving, they have the 4, 6, 8 pin connectors, etc... I ordered the stuff to put new sleeves and connectors on everything that didn't come with my new harness like the stuff from the instrument cluster.
