hot coil-no spark from ignitor test

Hi Guys,

I need a little direction on this, I have been cleaning up my wiring/ground connections on my bike. You guys are so right about this.

Anyways, my left coil runs 20 degrees hotter that my right coil with key on/engine off. Can't figure out why? I have cleaned replaced every ground connection that I could find except bullet ground connections to my turn signals. They work fine.

Also, I did the 11/2 volt ignitor test. No spark from any spark plug. But the bike runs? Could this be a bad ignitor and the bike will still run? Plugs show a blue spark when you hit the starter button and the plug is grounded to the engine.

One last thing, put new horns on the bike,205 ohm. Wired correctly. New connections. Sounds like a wounded cow! Ran a separate feed and the horns work great. Pulled and cleaned horn button. don't know where else to trace for possible issues. Any thoughts?

What bike do you have?
Stock or aftermarket coils?
Did you measure the primary and secondary ohms of the coils?
Condition of the plug wires and caps?

Put a relay on that horn.

If the bike runs the igniter works.

Check the ohms between leads (plug wires) on both coils and check the volts going into each coil.

I have a 1980 gs750et,12,000miles on it.
I put on dynatek 3 ohm coils (green)
primary coils at 3.4 ohms each
secondary coils at 30,000 ohms each
brand new 7mm plug wires and caps from Z1

Yes, my left coil is getting hot. At least 20 to 25 degrees hotter than the right one.

That may be normal due to the placement of the coil on the frame. It may run cooler once the bike is moving and air is moving over the coil. Other than the temp difference is the bike experiencing any other problems. If not, I would keep an eye on it, and ride the bike.

The voltage to my coils is 10.79 volts not 12. I have cleaned up alot of bad connections.I started with 9.2 volts at the coils. Need to do carbs next and check valves. It's all apart and the bike has been painted.

Put the leg up and rest.

Try the relay mod for the low voltage at the coils.

Make sure your battery is fully charged, and do the coil mod.

I don't know this bike but if it uses points then it will do that if the contacts are closed on that coil.
Try swapping the coils around and see if the problem shifts, if it does and the bike runs okay, I wouldn't worry about it until it shuts off one day and is much hotter.
