1985 Suzuki GS 700 E

Hello all,

I am new to the site and excited about my first bike. I recently purchased a used 1985 Suzuki GS 700E with 29,000 miles on it. The person I bought the bike off of did his own work to the bike...carbs, valves and some other things. I got the bike cheap so I wasn't concerned that it didn't start. The bike ran last year but since his work to the carbs and valves it doesn't start. I am hoping that my post can give much insight to the 1985 GS 700E and to me. He said the carbs leaked, so I have downloaded the general carb cleaning manual provided on this site. I live in Maryland so if any owners are nearby drop me a line or email. Any suggestions to get this bike going? Again, I am hoping this bike can be a good model/help forum for all 1985 GS 700 E owners.

By all means, go though the carbs and clean them properly. Replace all the O-rings on the inside and on the rubber carb boots as well.

A few things not mentioned in the carb rebuild tutorial include using an impact driver to remove stubborn screws and make sure you have an appropriate screwdriver to remove the pilot jets and pilot screws. I took an old screw driver and ground it down on a bench grinder to assure the tip fits tightly into the slot on these screws. If the screws are hard to turn don’t force things, hit them with PB Blaster or similar and get a heat gun on the screws. Work them back and forth and keep them wet with the spray oil until they come loose.

You say the PO did the valves. Maybe you need to check on his work in that area. Pull the valve cover, check the cam timing and check the valve clearances cold to make sure everything is OK in that area. If the valves are too tight you will lose compression because valves will not close completely.

Valve clearance is 0.004-0.005".

Since it ran (supposedly) prior to the PO worked on it, just start with the basics:

1. Valve adjustment
2. Carb clean/new O rings/ carb sync
3. Change the oil
4. Change the brake fluid
5. check your chain
6. Check the tires

Also, drain out the old gas and pour it in your car. Check inside the tank for rust.
