    What is a skunk?

Is it a specific GS model, a particular year, or engine size?
    Thanks!

Smallish animal, black with a white stripe running the entire length of the body. Can spray some pretty deadly stinky liquid on bike that will last forever. Avoid at ALL possibility.
    Sorry, bored and couldn't resist.

Never heard of a GS being called a Skunk?

LOL I have set myself up for that!

Yes a few times but have never known what model people were referring to. Is it the GS1000 (78, 79 or 80), with a specific seat, tank, etc?

There's also a very nice example of a skunk featured in the March/April issue of Motorcycle Classics Magazine. http://www.thegsresources.com/_forum...d.php?t=137768

I happen to know the owner...a pretty cool fella himself!

                Verry nice!!! Congrats!
So ... I still don't know. Is it only one particular year (i.e.: 78), or are they all called skunks (78,79 and 80 GS1000E)?
                Thanks!

                  1978 GS1000 only.
There were the only ones with an indent in the tank for the stripe.
Even though the Black/white version is the one true skunk, all '78 1000's have ended up with the "skunk" nickname.

Thank you very much! Now it all makes sense to me.

'78 was also the only year with black & white colors.

                      Thanks for the props!

In pieces at the moment as I'm fitting new turn signals (found some that are like 1/4 scale versions of the originals) plus a new throttle spring, oil change, freshen up the pipe etc plus I'm fitting the CBR rotors on this one now as they're working out so well on the 1000G.
