Petcock to Tank gasket leak?

Hello,
Anyone have this problem before? I just did a petcock rebuild with a kit from ebay. Petcock is functioning well and does not seem to leak, but...

The gasket that sits in the ridge of the petcock (o-ring like material). The oval one with the cross pieces. seems to me to be a bit undersized. When set into the groove on the petcock it barely rises above the ridge. When I install to the tank there is only like a half turn of the bolts before metal to metal contact between the tank and the petcock.

Thus, it leaks!

I have sanded down the bottom surface of the tank to insure smoothness. I am now considering making a paper type gasket to match the tank holes and hoping for some more squish factor.

Any Ideas?

No kidding. Get an OE seal and be done with it.

I had the same problem and to temporarily rectify it, I cut a piece of rubber from an inner tube and fashioned a rubber gasket out of that until the OEM arrived. I still haven't put the OeM gasket on because the rubber piece works so well.

Fixed for now!

I will probably still try an OEM part, but for now thanks to Ace Hardware plumbing dept. a nice piece of rubber did the trick!

A little silicon high temperature gasket maker also helps in such cases. just put a little on the rubber gasket before bolting it down.

i had the same problem. What i did to fix it is to turn the o-ring over. I looked more closely and i think i noticed the cross piece is off-set a little so if it were not on the right side it would not create a good seal against the metal.

Oddly enough, it worked for me. My o-ring may have been the original OEM.

i'd like to know if this works for you.
