Does this look original or somebody messed with it before?

It's stock, it should be a Dyna-S, better mileage, and a tad better performance!!

Ebay has some good deals but you can also go to the Dynatek website.

I've got two Dyna S ignitions that are now superfluous to my needs. One new (out of packaging) that showed up recently from the previous owner of my racebike, and one used that I bought off a seller here. PM me if you're interested in one. (I sent you a note about the coils too).

Is there really a measurable difference, I wonder, unless the stock one is faulty, with misfiring issues?
                On a stock bike?

Hi, the stock ignitions are not designed to run well in the upper revs. The dyna-s will perform great in high revs, get better gas mileage, start easier, and will deliver more performance.
I have proved the performance at the drag strip with several different bikes. They are VERY common at the race track...........Bob

There's a fair bit of variation between the ignition systems on the different GS bikes. The early electronic ignition (starting in 1980) used a mechanical advance and then in 1982 some models went to a new type of ignitor with the advance curve built into the electronics. And even with in a family of bikes the ignitors varied; most look like a black box but I took this ignitor off a 1981 1000GL parts bike. Guess I'm trying to say that the systems changed quite a bit so personally I wouldn't draw too many generalities about performance.
