How to check oil properly?
On my GSX400 with a dipstick, how do I correctly check the oil?
Do I just set it on top, or do I screw it in all the way?Tags: None -

Well, never had a bike with a dipstick. Every other engine I've had with a dip stick, it had to be seated all the way. I was just using common sense that must not apply here.

Ask and you shall receive!

So I checked the oil after it was fully warmed up and level and it turns out it's just past the F mark. When cold and level it's right in the middle. So by this information, I'm supposed to drain out a little oil until it's in between the marks when it's fully warmed up?Comment

If I'm not mistaken, after you circulate the oil it should be LESS than just checking it after it's been sitting a day or more... What you posted seems counter intuitive

Agree. Level will increase when the bike sits for a while. That's why Suzuki specs the level after one min.Ed

Well, checking oil isn't that hard and I didn't screw it up.
When it's cold and level it is in between. When fully warmed up and sitting level after a minute or two it's at the F mark.
Edit: Perhaps the oil expands when it's hot thus giving a 'fuller' reading. It's my only explenation.Last edited by Guest; 03-21-2009, 08:12 PM.Comment
