No! The charging system is either the rectifier or the stator, or both. Ray.

On two occasions I have had a starter solenoid fail immediately after using jumper cables connected to a battery in a car to start it. Once with a '79 CBX, and again with a '80 GS1000G. I beleive that each time the vehicle was running at the time. I don't know of any engineering reason why that would cause a starter solenoid to fail, but after two separate occasions, it is difficult to believe that it is strictly a coincidence.

I got a used solenoid off a parts bike for the Suzuki for like 5 bucks.

If it clicks when you press your stater button, it's probably operating normally, as it should. That means that your problem is, in all likelihood, either the wire (or connection) between the solenoid and your starter.... or the starter, itself. A good solenoid always clicks when you push the starter button...you just don't usually hear it because of the noise from the starter.

Try supplying power directly to your starter (hot wire to the leed wire and ground to the starter body). See if it turns over. If it doesn't, you'll need to remove it and check the brushes to see if they're worn out....or it might just be a grubby armature, which you can easily clean up with some emery cloth.

Before you do that, you can also use a screwdriver and cross the two connections on the solenoid (with the ignition on). Does it turn over??

Also, how's the condition of your battery??

I strongly suspect the problem is with your starter....let us know what you find out!

I'm not sure why the running engine is problematic, but I have heard several times on this forum to not jump a Motorcycle from a running car. If you need a jump from a car, KEEP the Car engine OFF.

I regularly charge my Motorcycle battery using a car charger, but I keep it set to the lowest 5 amp scale. Even at that it is probably charging the little moto battery too fast so I only do it for limited periods.
