    tapping coming from engine

    i know this is valve clearance but is this the cams taping the shims or the valves knocking against the pistons? note there are impressions of valves on the pistons but i dont know if thats normal or not

      cams slapping the shims, or rocker arm, depending on the model of bike.

                  sounds like what I just did to my bike, but in the oposite way. bikes top end was a bit noisy, so i adjusted the valves, got it back together (i'm starting to hate Vetter) fired it up and tap tap tap tap, right in sync with the motor. Guess i have to do it all over again.

                      That same noise can be an exhaust leak. You may have a bad exhaust gasket.
