GS750ET carb removal ?s

I'm in the process of removing the carbs from the GS750ET. I read the book, etc, and just about got them off, but ran into two issues not covered in the manual.

1. Seems pretty mundane, but I can't figure out how the inner throttle cable is attached to the throttle shaft. The manual didn't make an issue out of taking the cable off so I wasn't expecting a problem. Between my bifocals and my brail method, can't see how it is attached. Is it possible to detach it after the carbs are part way out?

2. Another surprise the manual didn't mention, but there appears to be a wire guide between carb #1 and #2 that positions the clutch cable. Is it easier to remove the clutch cable or do a head stand and try and take the screws out of carb #1 and #2 while they are still in position?

1. It is easier to slide the carbs out of the boots, then hold the throttle open with a finger and remove the throttle cable. When you get the carbs loose, you will see how the cable wraps around the pulley, then has an end that slides in sideways. Just give the cable enough slack so it sticks out perpendicular to the pulley and slide it sideways.

When re-installing the carbs, be sure to put the throttle cable in before putting the carbs back in the boots.

2. Don't worry about the wire guide at all. When you slide the carbs back, the guide will slide off the clutch cable, then you can slide the carbs out the side. There is no need to remove the wire guide unless and until you dismantle the rack for deep cleaning (dipping) the carbs.

Thank you for the reply Steve. I see now where that wire bracket just unclips from the clutch cable and is not a problem.

I slide the air chamber box back off the carbs - just barely! Pulled the carbs back and..........they went back into the air box boots! Man-o-man, there isn't much room in there to get them free.

I looked in the manual I down loaded from BasCliff's site and on page 42 it suggests removing the rubber cylinder head intake pipe for #4 to get room to shift the carbs over and THEN remove the throttle cable. I'll give that a try after I calm down a bit.

I also noticed that the #1 cylinder head intake pipe has a hole in it - looks like the clamp may have cut into it - hope they are gonna be available.

I'm sure I'll be back for more moral support . . . . . . .

Have you loosened the attachments for the airbox to the frame? Sometimes this lets you slide it back another half inch or so, which might be all the room you need.

You should replace all 4. I found that they were handed, ie 2 LH and 2 RH, but the LH ones are discontinued. Its OK to use 4 RH boots, there is not much difference. I could see none at all in mine, but they were OK and I did not need to replace them.

Yes, I had removed the two bolts that secure the air box to the frame.

Well, I f-i-n-a-l-l-y got those carbs off! I took out the two bolts that hold the air box to the frame and that let the air box slide back maybe 3/8 of an inch! The carbs just cleared the air box boots, but the carb outlets were still in the intake pipes! When I tried to pull the carbs out of the intake pipes, they went right back in the air box boots! Now they are in the air box and free of the intake pipes, but the air box is so tall and wide that you can't move the carbs sideways at all. Arrrgh! FInally I just manhandled all the intake pipes and forced them off the head to get room to slide the carbs out. Only mangled two of the intake pipes.

I don't know how I'm gonna get those carbs back in their, but I'll worry about that after they have had their bath. (I sure wish I could tip the engine forward for more working room. Now I see why some of the list members run those pod things!)

I had to go to the big city this afternoon so I looked up the Suzuki dealer. Their computer said that the left hand intake pipe has been discontinued, but they said that their computer has some special function where they clicked on the discontinued part # and it ordered a 13121-45400, which seems to be the left hand intake pipe. And the cost is $14.77 ! I guess I better give this dealer a chance when I need more parts.
