How to install piston pin circlips?

I humbled to the core trying to install piston circlips. The open section of the C is huge and the only thing I've managed to do is scratch up the piston. Anyone have any tricks?

After 3 weisco piston side skirt marring sessions, it seems pushing the open end in first then the tail worked the best.

Relax and breath deeply. Wrap a wrag around so when the clip flies it gets caught.

Maybe some tape in the pin bore that can be pulled out after the clip is in place.

take a medium flat blade screw driver and cut a notch in it. use notch to carefully guide clip end in

Make up a piston cover out of a used plastic milk bottle and cut a hole in it the size of your gudgeon pin - it'll prevent any scratching of the piston.

Thanks for the suggestions. Just got back from installing the clips. Put the top edge of the clip in the groove, and then using a small screwdriver in the notch on the bottom, lifted up to get the clip to compress. Dang, was ready to kill earlier but the clips went right in once I figured out how.

Ive cussed many times at circlips, especially the ones in slides, but then i figured out that if i got the compressable side in the groove, removed the circlip pliars and used a blunt skinny scribe or centerpunch to push it in the rest of the way it worked great. Plus you dont risk scratching anything with a screwdriver blade, cos i am NOT a surgeon...lol
