850 ignitor started smoking

So I have a 81 GS850 and it starts and runs just great for about a couple min then it strait up kills no questions asked or it will cut down one cyclander and puff out a lot of white smoke out the left side.

so the conclusion I came to was something is getting hot and not functioning right or shorting out.

I thought it was the ignitor so I ordered one on Ebay and the thing ran great upon fire up. and ran for about 5 min no prob so far the longest it has run since I have owned it. and then all the sudden it started to waver(RPMs and then killed strait up. no slowly or any thing it just stopped. so I look down at the ignitor and it is smoking and super super hot. and the guy I bought it from told me it came off a working bike. so I put my old one back on and tried to start it and it ran ok at first then 1 min later it had a no fire in cyclander 1( I pulled the plug with no effect on RPMs) it then killed a bit later like 30 sec. and it was pouring white smoke out of the left.

what is wrong? coils are new accel I think one wire is bad cause I switched them and before cylander two was bad and now cylander one is because I switched them. but other than that I dont what I could do now? was it just at bad ignitor and the one on my bike is bad or what?

You let the magic smoke out! It wont work now. Those things are powered by that smoke! Actually, if you've burned up two ignitors, id start looking toward your charging system. Methinks perhaps your R/R is bit the dust? Dunno for sure, im no electrics wizard... Its all black magic and supernatural to me!

thats new too he hadnt even finished wiring it up when I got it.

Then Id be going back and double checking what he DID wire was done correctly...

I just copied the way that my 550 was wired up it is the same year.

If you can get it to run check the volts DC on the battery.

Do some research and make sure you have the correct 3 ohm accel coils.
They are not different colors like the dyna coils. The wrong coils will overheat & shutdown. I would get a dyna Ign at this point in time. Install it with the reg/rect disconnected, get the bike running. Then hook the reg back up and test the voltage

The coils won't get hot, it's the drivers in the ignitors that will heat up, then fail, if there is an impedance mismatch. If you feel the ignitor heating up, turn the bike off before you fry it.

I'd put some stock coils on with the next ignitor and test it that way. My guess is that you have incompatible coils..

The point being that a NEW Dyna S system will cost you roughly 120 bucks, give or take, depending on where you get it. A NEW IGNITOR, supposing you can still get one for your bike, will cost you around $300...yeah.. so the options here are limited and attached with at least a decent amount of cash...
